GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

A world of overlapping histories

Negative years are BCE. There is no year zero.

PROVENANCE & COVERAGE

A timeline, with its limits visible.

Dates retain their meaning

Exact days, years, approximate dates and historical periods are labelled separately. A first surviving inscription does not establish a language’s birth. Religious traditions and scholarly chronologies can differ.

Connections are navigation

Country, language and topic tags connect entries. They are editorial navigation aids, not claims of exclusive ownership or a complete historical territory. A shared time axis does not establish causation.

Selection, not complete history

Coverage is uneven. Annual statistical observations are shown separately below. No religious-share or historical-boundary estimates are inferred from the events.

Country coverage directory

Counts show stored records, not the completeness of a country’s history. Counts cover only the approved source collection. Language documentation years use present-day country associations; they do not establish where a language was historically spoken. Historical coverage remains uneven.

Source register & attribution

Only sources with verified reuse terms are included in the served collection. Records requiring further clearance are excluded from publication files. Reuse permissions do not independently verify historical accuracy or certify every legal obligation of a commercial website.

Source policy register · Wikidata heritage metadata · CC0

Event summaries are original brief accounts based on licensed structured metadata. Source essays, photographs and book text are not reproduced. Wikidata structured data is CC0; imported records retain source dates, statement links and retrieval dates. Country display names come from Unicode CLDR 48. Language identities, classifications and selected documentation dates come from the Glottolog CLDF snapshot retrieved 5 October 2026; its metadata identifies version 5.2.1. Attribution, modifications and the source revision are provided on the data licences page.
